When a child is unwell it can be emotionally distressing. Treating an unwell child may be challenging as the child may refuse to take their medication because of its taste or the medication is not available in a suitable dose form or concentration for children. Paediatric compounding allows us to prepare medication based on a child’s individual preference to taste, texture as well as preparing medication in a form that the child may swallow easily and a concentration that allows for easy dosing of children. Almost any category of medication may be compounded for children using a variety of flavours in the form of liquids, topical, transdermal, gummies, troches, lollipops and troches. Special needs are also addressed in preparing sugar-free, flavour-free, or preservative free formulations.
